A Guide to JamesRAy's Performance Fees

JamesRAy's performance fees start from $300

There are many factors JamesRAy needs to consider when preparing a performance fee quote.
This is why a fixed schedule of fees can't be included on this website. JR explains this below.

For public events

In order to give you a fair and accurate fee quote I need the following information.
  1. Whether the show is in-doors or out-doors? (I may have to hire covers for equipment should it start to rain or be too hot in the sun and I may have to hire additional equipment for out door shows, possibly even a stage/truck, generator, lights, etc.)
  2. What would be the show times? (prime time vs. off peak times - different value)
  3. Total approximate show length? (value is dependent on time required)
  4. Expected audience capacity? (this works two ways: bigger audiences often require more production & equipment for a professional high quality performance. Bigger audiences also mean better exposure and better sales potential of merchandise; cds, t-shirts etc.)
  5. Sound & Lights provided? (If these are provided, this will allow a huge reduction in the fee quoted by me or my agents. However, I'll still need to pay for my sound person if the sound is being mixed from off the stage.)
  6. Nature of the event: (i.e. concert, show, dance, fund raiser, party etc.) - (this has to do with quality of production required and sales potential)
  7. Will the client be requesting specific or special songs ? (for weddings, birthdays, etc. this may require extra rehearsals and costs for getting the song and learning it)
  8. Would this be a one time only date or could it be a potential regular? (i.e. RSA, Cozy club etc) - (multiple bookings are discounted to secure regular performances.)
  9. Would there be any objection to selling/marketing merchandise?(i.e. CD's and tapes) - (additional sales revenue could offset submitted performance fee)
  10. Is there a pre-set budget that has to be worked with? If so what is it? I'll do my best to work within any budget. (I'd rather try to meet someone's pre-set budget than to be disregarded with no feedback about a submitted proposed fee. There are most usually always a way to structure a win-win deal)
  11. Will you or the client be able to make the standard 20% non-refundable deposit to secure the dates? (The deposit can reduce the quoted performance fee because this does a few things: makes the date more secure so that other work isn't turned down for a gig that may be cancelled, makes the booking agreement/contract more binding and establishes a legitimate booking.)
  12. Is there a preference for: solo, duo or band? (more guys more costs)

Private Events

I would be quite happy to work with you to arrive at a performance fee to suit you. There are a few considerations when calculating a fee for any festival. I need you to provide me with the following in order to calculate the most economical fee for your event:

  1. For events outside Auckland, Would any be transport provided, and would it be a rental for JamesRAy's use or a shuttle service? (will have to pay for fuel in a rental? will I have to pay for shuttle service?)
  2. For events outside Auckland, What would the accommodation be? (i.e. hotel, motel, campground cabin, billet etc.) (there could be additional costs for food etc.)
  3. Would there be food and drink at the event for artist or would that be an extra cost to the artist?
  4. Do you want a solo or duo performance, or a band?
  5. Would the show be in-doors or out-doors? (I may have to hire covers for equipment should it start to rain or be too hot in the sun and I may have to hire additional equipment for out door shows, possibly even a stage/truck, generator, lights, etc.)
  6. What would be the show times?
  7. Total approximate show length? (value is dependent on time required)
  8. Expected audience capacity? (this works two ways: bigger audiences often require more production & equipment for a professional high quality performance. Bigger audiences also mean better exposure and better sales potential of merchandise; cds, t-shirts etc.)
  9. Sound & Lights provided for larger shows? (If these are provided, this will allow a huge reduction in the fee quoted by me. However, I'll still need to pay for my sound person if the sound is being mixed from off the stage.)
  10. Will you be requesting specific or special songs ? (for weddings, birthdays, etc. this may require extra rehearsals and costs for getting the song and learning it)
  11. What does your budget allow for professional entertainers at JamesRAy's level? (I'd rather try to meet someone's pre-set budget than to be disregarded with no feedback about a proposed fee).
There is almost always a way to structure a win-win deal
